According to Billboard.com, Gaga has landed the highest first week sales of an album since 50 Cent's 'The Massacre' in 2005. Gaga's official tally for Born This Way's first week is a preliminary 1,108,000; that's 1.1 million folks. The only other female artist in SoundScan history to log a #1 album with higher sales is with Britney Spears' sophomore effort, 'Oops! I Did It Again', which debuted with 1.34 million copies in 2000.
Her sales eclipsed recent releases by Taylor Swift and even Lil Wayne's Tha Charter III, by 50,000-75,000 copies.
According to Streamline/Interscope, Gaga's album shipped over two million copies to stores ahead of its first week, and may nab her one of the fastest double-platinum certifications in history if second week sales are even half the amount of the first week.
Of the 1.1 million, nearly 660,000 were digital downloads, giving Gaga the highest sales week for a digital album in history.
No word yet as to how many of the album's tracks may debut on the Hot 100 due to digital downloads from the first week, but if Gaga's brutal debut says anything, Gaga could be on the verge of notching the most top ten singles from an album since Janet Jackson pulled off the feat with six singles from 'janet.' between 1993-1995.
It looks like everyone who said this album wouldn't be a success can be found in corners with feet in their mouths. From here forward, it's all up to us to keep Gaga's current hold on the single sales charts. Since her debut, she's logged 10 consecutive top ten solo singles, and is the first artist since Whitney Houston in 1985 to maintain this streak starting with their first solo single. Had Gaga not collaborated with Wade for the song 'Chillin'', she would be the only female artist in history to log 10 consecutive top ten singles in the US from their debut, and one of only a few women to have every single from their first three albums reach the top ten.
