Nigerian Army has said that it is currently investigating the video trending on social media showing Nigerian Army personnel assaulting some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The soldiers were seen flogging some IPOB members and later asked them to swim inside dirty-muddy water while also forcing them to drink and sleep inside the water. Although the source of the video was not verified, the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman, said that the military hierarchy was aware of the video and is investigating it.
He said, “We are aware of certain video being circulated. We have gotten complaints of the said video, and have commenced an investigation into the matter and the report would be made public. “The General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Major General Adamu Abubakar, is investigating it and whatever it is, we will definitely let the public know about the outcome.”
The Nigerian Army which is currently carrying out an exercise in the South East code-named, Python Dance 11, has been accused of varying human rights abuses in the region including the invasion of the Abia State home of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu and attack on the secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state. Meanwhile, Abia State’s Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has announced a one day extension of the curfew in the state following the tension caused by clash between troops of the Nigerian Army and IPOB members in the state.
The governor stated in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos, that the curfew has been extended to Friday.
