A Mararaba Upper Area
Court, Nasarawa State, on Tuesday sentenced a 19-year-old man, Yohana Peter, to
three months imprisonment for stealing three pieces of kola nut.
The presiding officer,
Vincent Gwehemba, however, gave the convict an option to pay N1, 000 fine, and
warned him to desist from committing crime.
Peter, a resident of
Hope Bakery in Angwa Katainawa, Mararaba, had pleaded guilty to a one-count
charge of theft.
He pleaded with the
court to temper justice with mercy, that he will not do it again.
The Prosecutor, Donald
Herman, had told the court that on April 17, one Friday Idu and two others came
to Sani Abacha Police Station, Mararaba and reported the matter.
Herman said on the
same date, at about 2:20 p.m., the convict was arrested with three pieces of
kola nut, three pieces of chew gum and five pieces of eggs.
He said that during
police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime, that he stole them
from somebody’s shop in that area.
The prosecutor said
the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.
