Fulani Nomads, Soldiers Kill Four In N’delta

Four persons were feared dead on Monday in a bloody fight between Fulani nomads and community members along the Bayelsa-Delta area of the East-West Road.

Two members of the community were said to have died of machete wounds in the attack.

It was learnt that trouble started when cattle driven by the nomads invaded farmlands belonging to Ohoro community, Ughelli North in Delta State.

The farmers, who were angry over the destruction of their crops by the cattle, were said to have confronted the nomads.

A source said the nomads suddenly attacked two of the farmers with daggers, killing them on the spot.

Other farmers were said to have cried to their community members compelling the youth to go after the fleeing nomads.

A source told our correspondents that the youths combed the area for the nomads in a bid to avenge the killing of their kinsmen.

The source said, “The situation is tensed. The people are angry and they are looking everywhere for northerners. Most of the northerners are fleeing the area.”

The commotion, however, caused a traffic gridlock along the East-West Road, forcing most motorists and travellers to abandon their vehicles.

Another source said the incident led to complete breakdown of law and order, adding that it created panic in the area.

It was, however, learnt that the Joint Task Force has taken over the community in an effort to restore peace.

The Media Coordinator, JTF, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, confirmed the incident, saying nobody was killed by the soldiers.

He said, “There was crisis between some Fulani and a community in Delta North. The allegation is that some Fulani people killed two people from that community and there was a breakdown of law and order in that area. But the JTF is at the scene.

“Efforts are being made to calm down nerves with a view to commencing investigations in the allegation. It is not true that soldiers shot community persons. I have spoken to the commanding officer and he assured me there was no such thing.”

Meanwhile, there was tension in Asaba and neighbouring towns after the news of the Fulani killing of two Ohoro community members broke.
