Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith deny reports of marriage split
The A-list couple, who have one of the most solid relationships in showbusiness, issued a statement late on Tuesday insisting their 13-year marriage was “intact”.
They were forced to deny a US magazine report quoting an “insider” that they had separated, sparking a frenzy of rumours around the globe.www.mannastores.com
"Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of reports, the rumours circulating about our relationship are completely false,” the stars said. “We are still together. Our marriage is intact."
Pinkett-Smith’s spokeswoman issued a further denial that the actress had an affair with her “Hawthorne” television show co-star Marc Anthony, who recently separated from his wife Jennifer Lopez.
Such was the ferocity of the rumours that swept the globe that at one stage the term “Will and Jada” was the second highest “trending” topic on Twitter as fans reacted with horror to the false reports.
The rumours were first published by In Touch Weekly magazine, which caught many observers by surprise.
Some questioned the language of the statement, particulary of the use of the word "intact" amid suggestions that while they had not separated the marriage was in trouble.
The Men In Black star married his wife on New Year's Eve 1997 after meeting her on the set of the cult 1990s television The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which was the 42 year-old’s big break.
Pinkett-Smith auditioned to be her future husband's girlfriend on hit comedy series but while she did not get the role they pair became close friends.
Their wedding, at a mansion near her hometown of Baltimore, was a small intimate affair in front of about 100 close friends and family. Pinkett-Smith was two months pregnant at the time.
Commentators have praised the couple as an example of the “perfect Tinseltown marriage”.
The couple have two children together, actor son Jaden, 13, and 10 year-old daughter Willow, who is a budding pop star.
Pinkett-Smith, 39, is also stepmother to Smith's 18-year-old son from this first marriage, Willard Christopher Smith, who is also known as Trey.
Trey Smith also took to Twitter to deny the rumours: “@BreakingNews: After 13 years of marriage, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have decided to separate – @intouchweekly NOT TRUE #ItsAllLies.”
“Let me just say. the rumours need to stop. Will and Jada aren't getting divorced, #ItsAllLies”
In 2008, Smith told Ellen Degeneres, the comedian turned chat show host, that the pair had a solid marriage.
"What I found is divorce just can't be an option," he said.
"It's merely that simple. I think that's the problem with Los Angeles. There are so many options.
"So a huge part of the success for Jada and I is that we just removed the other options."
The couple have been persistently tainted by rumours that their marriage was on the rocks.
Pinkett-Smith said in a 2009 interview that the couple work hard at keeping their marriage fun. "Have a fantasy date. Be his secretary!"
But the actress later admitted that she enjoyed time apart from her rap star and actor spouse.
"People think that Will and I don't spend a lot of time together. Too much time, actually, if you ask me," she said.
"It's always nice to have a little time apart. Sometimes you need that."
Smith divorced Sheree Zampino, a former fashion design student, in 1995 after three years together.
