Lionel Messi says he's retiring from international soccer after Copa America loss
Lionel Messi told
reporters after Argentina's Copa America Centenario final loss to Chile on
penalty kicks that he is retiring from the national team. Sunday
night, Messi said that after so many missed chances, he is ready to step away.
Messi was Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer during Copa America Centenario. He spoke out about problems with the Argentina football federation, but did not bring that up when he told reporters of his decision to quit international soccer.
He
said:
"The national team is over for me. That’s
four finals (lost), it's not for me," Messi told
reporters after losing his third final in as many
years. "It’s a made decision, I think."
Argentina lost to Chile in penalty kicks on Sunday
night.
Argentina lost to Chile in penalties in the 2015 Copa America and lost to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. They also lost to Brazil in the 2007 final.
